Children obsessed with playing light switches!

The “art” of obsession has come as a tornado into my house recently.  Well, I know how toddlers get easy to be obsessed with something. 

But I could never imagine that a little switch will be the one for my child.

It all started from the day my little girl asked for turning off the light by herself.  At first, I didn’t see anything wrong with it because people always say that it is a good thing when children ask a chance to learn new thing.  It’s the way for them to feel like they are a part of this world.  After the first try, my girl seems to fall in love with the rocker switch everywhere in the house.  As long as she sees one, and the one is reachable for her, she starts to “play” with it.  She enjoys the result how she turns on and off the switch with the magical mechanism.  The on-and-on light shows in my house become daily routine for months, and I have no idea what to do with this obsession. (It would be great if you can give me some other advice here!)

Some traditional way to stop this behavior is says “No” policy.  Once they start to play with the rocker switch, you say “STOP!” or “No, you can’t do that!” or anything that might encourage them to do this continuously.  In this way, my partner never made her stop doing this.  Not until I read an article talks about Autism Spectrum Disorders do I realize that this might the reason why my child likes to play the switch around the house.  “A very satisfying level of control if you are living in the chaotic world which is autism.” says the blogger who also has the same problem here.  I guess the things we parents can do now is to tolerate the life under flickering light show, or perhaps, ready to buy more rocker switch to replace the broken one.

The toggle switch is manually actuated by a mechanical lever or rocking mechanism.  The reason why the switch is so popular is that it is available for different sizes and styles.  With a positive snap-action, the switch can be operated because the mechanism joint two arms with an elbow-like pivot.  My friend also told me that the toggle switch is usually designed to provide simultaneous actuation of a number of electrical contacts or main voltages.  “As a maintainer“, he said, “good quality of the components always decide how professional a maintainer is.” If I were the client, I won’t mind if the maintainer is experienced or not as long as he/she can send a normal working machine back to me.  I think the rule is universally available.

As for the material of the hot stamping, there are mainly two types of it, which are, the metallic and the pigment foil construction.  The former type has a metal-like sheen and gives a shiny look to the foil stamped design.  The foil paper is available for metal like gold, silver, bronze or cooper.  The pigment foil construction, however, does not have a metallic look but has high glossy finish.  Comparing all these materials for metal dies, magnesium is said to be the least expensive but also the least in terms of durability. Hardened steel is the most expensive but is favored because of its extreme durability.  Silicone rubber dies are also used in the hot stamping process. This material is further subcategorized according to hardness. They are simply favorable with images that are not flat however they are not as firm as the metal dies.
