A rivet nut, popularly known as blind nut or rivnut, is a single piece internally threaded tubular rivet that can easily be fastened from one side. First developed by BF Goodrich in late 1930s, it was initially used to mount rubber deicing boots to aircrafts but soon became popular in automobile industry. Today, there are two types of rivet nuts: one of the types is used to form a bulge on the back side of the panel. The other type is drawn into the sleeves and doesnt create a bulge. A rivet nut is mostly made of anodized aluminum and other substances which do not conduct electric current. Today, there are number of different rivet nuts available in various sizes and shapes.
