A USB flash drive is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. They are typically removable and rewritable, and physically much smaller than a floppy disk. USB flash drives are often used for the same purposes for which floppy disks or CD-ROMs were used, i.e., for storage, back-up and transfer of computer files. They are smaller, faster, have thousands of times more capacity, and are more durable and reliable because they have no moving parts. In a nutshell, there are lots of advantages for using flash memory USB sticks. For instance, flash drives use little power, have no fragile moving parts, and for most capacities are small and light. Data stored on flash drives is impervious to mechanical shock, magnetic fields, scratches and dust. These properties make them suitable for transporting data from place to place and keeping the data readily at hand. Furthermore, flash drives also store data densely compared to many removable medias.
Nowadays, most personal computers support USB. Flash drives implement the USB mass storage device class so that most modern operating systems can read and write to them without installing device drivers. Another advantage of large-capacity USB drives is that entire operating systems (OS) can be stored on them, and these can be used as boot devices to restore an OS on a PC in case of a system malfunction or failure. Using the AutoPlay command available on a USB flash drive, programs and applications can also be directly run from a USB drive. The compact nature, affordability and portability characteristic of USB flash drives also make them amenable for giveaway or promotional purposes.
