Your baby is on the way, and there is a lot to think about. Besides making sure that you have baby furniture and clothing for your new son or daughter, you'll want to check that your home is safe. These tips can help you cover all the safety bases.

Before you bring baby home:

• Remove pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals from the crib to prevent your baby from suffocation.
• Check to see that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home are working. Place at least one smoke detector on each level of your home and in halls outside of bedrooms. Have an escape plan in case of fire.
• Put emergency numbers, including poison control, near each phone. Have at least one phone in your home connected by land line. Cordless phones do not work when the power is out, and cellphone batteries can run out.
• Make sure your home or apartment number is easy to see so fire or rescue can locate you quickly in an emergency.
• Make sure handrails are installed and secure in stairways. Always hold the handrail when using stairs, especially when holding your baby.

Your baby will be crawling before you know it. Most babies begin crawling around six to nine months. Crawling on your hands and knees will reveal many dangers to your baby. Thinking ahead to the toddler years will help you to take care of other hazards before your baby grows and finds them first. Here are some things to do before your baby is crawling:

• Cover all unused electrical sockets with outlet plugs.
• Keep chords out of baby's reach. Tack up chords to vertical blinds and move furniture, lamps, or electronics to hide chords.
• Secure furniture and electronics, such as bookcases and TVs, so they cannot be pulled down on top of your baby.
• Use protective padding to cover sharp edges and corners, such as from a coffee table or fireplace hearth.
• Install safety gates at the bottom and top of stairwells or to block entry to unsafe rooms.
• Use safety latches on cabinets and doors.
• Store all medicines, cleaning products, and other poisons out of baby's reach.
• Remove rubber tips from doorstops or replace with one-piece doorstops.
• Look for and remove all small objects. Objects that easily can pass through the center of a toilet paper roll might cause choking.
• Keep houseplants out of baby's reach. Some plants can poison or make your baby sick.
• Set you water heater temperature to no higher than 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Water that is hotter can cause bad burns.
• Closely supervise your baby around a family pet. Pets need time to adjust to a new baby.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) 鈥?Within months of his 2002 release from prison after burglary convictions, was accused in the shooting death of a retired sheriff's deputy during a holdup of a South Texas amusement center.
Now the 36-year-old Quintanilla is set to die Tuesday evening for the slaying in Victoria, about 125 miles southwest of Houston.
He'd be the ninth Texas inmate to receive lethal injection this year, the first of two this week and the 501st since the state resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.
The 5th on Saturday refused to halt the execution and his lawyers told state attorneys they would take their case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Quintanilla contends his confession was coerced by threats of charges against his sister, was improperly allowed into evidence and that he had deficient legal help during his trial and in earlier stages of his appeals.
His lawyers last month obtained affidavits from two jurors from his 2004 trial who said the confession influenced their decision to convict him of fatally shooting 60-year-old . No physical evidence could tie him to the slaying scene or murder weapon recovered in a canal and no witness could identify him, according to the appeal.
"Because he would not have been convicted of capital murder had his confession not been admitted at trial, the admission of the coerced confession was certainly not a harmless error," , a law professor representing Quintanilla, said in the federal court appeal.
State attorneys argued his claim was without merit and violated court rules by being filed first in federal courts, improperly bypassing state courts. The juror affidavits were inadmissible, inappropriate and barred by federal rules of evidence, , an assistant Texas attorney general, said.

Billings was shot three times, the last shot fired while he was on his knees, evidence showed. The robbers fled with about $2,000.
During questioning by detectives in an unrelated robbery some two months later, Quintanilla made comments related to the Billings case.
"He starts telling them what happened and it was his fault and he took them out to where they threw the rifles and masks in the Victoria barge canal," , Quintanilla's lead trial lawyer recalled last week. "Divers found all the stuff. ... We objected to his statements, but the court allowed it in."
Beeler said Quintanilla chose to confess rather than also link his sister and brother-in-law to the robbery and several others.
Quintanilla also ordered his defense team present no mitigating evidence during the punishment phase of his trial where jurors deciding on his sentence could have considered he had virtually no parental supervision while growing up, Beeler said.
"It's extremely frustrating," he said. "He tied my hands so bad I couldn't work to at least try to get him a second chance."
Quintanilla's accomplice, , 33, is serving 60 years for murder and 50 years for aggravated robbery.
Another Texas inmate, , 41, is set for lethal injection Thursday evening for a double slaying in Lubbock in 2001.

By making wage and hour protections available for the first time, the government may encourage some of these gray market workers to play by the rules. That would protect both them and their clients. Others, however, may still feel it is a better deal to work tax-free and give up worker protections.
Won鈥檛 these new rules increase an already-unsustainable long-term care burden on families and the nation? Theywill certainly add direct costs. That is the flip side of paying aides a decent wage. But doing this is not only right, it is necessary if we are going to have enough direct care workers to care for an aging baby boom population.
