Build up a Constant Current for Your high power LED driver!

Recently 1-watt and 3-watt Power LED's just cost in $3 to $5 range, it quite cheap and easy to get one. However, the constant current drivers cost pretty expensive instead. So, with simple procedure we also can produce power LED driver by ourselves manually.

Here will show you how to build up a simple and cheap, but incredibly effective constant current source.

Below are the components you need to prepare prior to the process.

a LM317 Regulator. 
a Resistor
a Heatsink for the LM317

Luxeon LEDs, or other brands of high power LEDs

Wires

Let’s get started!

At first, you need to get a constant current. By the method through putting into a resistor between ADJ and Vout which two constant voltage of 1,25 volts given out by the LM317 regulator.

There are different types of calculations depending on different power consumptions.

Here’re some instructions:

Connect one or more luxeon 1W LEDs: power consumption of 350mA

The calculation: 1,25 (the constant reference voltage of the LM317)

Divided by 0,350(the LEDs power consumption)

Makes 3,57, the resistor is 3,57 ; and the constant current will be 350mA.

The nearest E12 value is 3,9 ohms, providing a constant current of 321mA.

Advice:

1. Less than 1 Amperes is permitted; though the LM317 is rated for 1,5 Ampere. It will get very hot when the application needs more than 1 Amperes.
2. The resistor must be at least 1W in both calculations.
3. There is 3 V drop voltage in the constant current source, so the supply voltage requires 3 V higher than the LED voltage; and it can be reach to 37V, the maximum input voltage of the LM317. 
4. Unnecessary high voltage is not allowed to supply with.
   
   

Example:

You can start connecting two Luxeon LEDs with 3,42 voltage each. Then the input voltage will change from 9,84V (3,42 + 3,42 + 3) till 37V (3,42 + 3,42 + 30,6). 

This circuit can be connected with ten high power LEDs at most.

 

In conclusion, following the instructions above the article, power LED driver
becomes easy to build up. This is the way that provides rather cheap and efficient.
