What is a LVDS?

VDS, or low-voltage differential signalling, was introduced in the mid-1990’s and is very popular in computers, where it forms part of very high-speed networks and computer buses. It is a high-speed digital interface that is used for several applications that require high noise immunity and low power consumption for high data rates. LVDS is used in several applications and industries, including commercial and military applications. The LVDS standard provides guidelines defining the electrical characteristics for driver output and receiver input of an LVDS interface. Growing demands for bandwidth have resulted in the development of high performance technologies based on high-speed LVDS connections. Due to the high noise immunity and low power aspects of LVDS and the great quantity of commercial off the shelf LVDS components, several military and aerospace applications have selected LVDS as a robust and long-term solution for high-speed data transmission.

Types of LVDS

Applications for LVDS:

LVDS are designed to be used for applications including flat panel displays that use an LVDS connection to the graphics card as well as for high data transmission in printers, digital copiers and cell phones. Due to its low noise emission and high noise rejection characteristics, LVDS is a reliable choice for military and aerospace applications. LVDS interfaces are used for avionic communications and surveillance to protect the integrity of the transmitted signals.

 

Wire Connector

Twist-on wire connectors are used to fasten two or more electrical conductors together. They are a type of electrical connector.

Twist-on wire connectors are also known as wire nuts ("Wire-Nut" is a registered trademark of Ideal Industries) or cone or thimble connectors. Marrette or Marr connectors are two other trade names for such connectors.

In the UK, they were made out of ceramic and sold under the brand "Scruit." Their use was outlawed some fifty years ago.

Twist-on wire connectors are available in a variety of sizes and shapes and are typically made from plastic, with a tapered, conducting coiled metal insert that threads onto the wires to hold the wires secure. When the connector is twisted onto the stripped ends of the wires, they are drawn into the metal insert. The electrical continuity is maintained by both the direct wire to wire contact and by the metal insert. Twist-on wire connectors are intended to be installed by hand only, and may include molded grooves or blades intended to assist in hand installation. Hex tips or hex-like wings are commonly molded into higher-quality connectors that allow them to be installed with a common nut driver.

Twist-on wire connectors are commonly color-coded to indicate the nut's size (and hence, its wire capacity). They are commonly used as an alternative to terminal blocks or soldering conductors together because they are faster and allow subsequent removal for future rework.

Twist-on wire connectors are not generally recommended for use with aluminum wire; however, one company makes a purple-colored Wire-Nut that is listed for such use. Also, most connectors are not rated for wet use (such as exposed outdoors), a special gel-filled connector must be used in this circumstance.

HDMI and Gaming Consoles: Good Match or Not Worth It?

In the world of gaming there are 2 different consoles that offer the use of HDMI. Let’s take a look at how to use an HDMI cable on these consoles, and whether it’s worth the price or change-over hassle.

Playstation 3
The Playstation 3 is the only gaming console on the market that can support the full use of 1080p HD. This is because they have a built in blu-ray player which allows you to watch 1080p video. So is there a reason to use HDMI cables over component cables? The truth is that HDMI cables are going to provide a slightly better image than a component cable. This is based on the fact that the PS3 generates all its images in a digital format. A component cable has to convert the analog signal to a digital signal and loses some of the quality in the process. If you do choose to go with an HDMI cable for your PS3 we would suggest a high speed cable based on the fact that standard cables do not support 1080p HD.

Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 follows the same rules, when it comes to analog conversion, as the Playstation 3. If you are looking for that little extra boost in image quality, the HDMI cable is going to win out over the typical component connections. However, the Xbox 360 can only support up to 720p HD, so the quakity loss in conversion is not as big a factor as it is with the PS3. If you do choose to go with an HDMI cable we would suggest you use a standard speed cable over a high performance one, based on the fact that Xbox 360 can only support 720p HD.

When you compare apples to apples, there is a slight advantage in using an HDMI cable over component cables and that is due to the overall conversion issue. The main problem with HDMI cables is that in the past there have been some minor issues with them being used on gaming systems. PS3 and Xbox 360 both had to bring out additional downloads and firmware updates to fix video and audio HDMI issues. This is a concern because there is always the chance of the same thing happening with future gaming consoles. Odds are, though, that there won’t be future issues like we have seen with PS3 and Xbox, but only time will tell. 

Ribbon Connector

A Ribbon cable Connector (also known as multi-wire planar cable) is a cable with many conducting wires running parallel to each other on the same flat plane. As a result the cable is wide and flat. Its name comes from the resemblance of the cable to a piece of ribbon.

Ribbon cables are usually seen for internal peripherals in computers, such as hard drives, CD drives and floppy drives. On some older computer systems (such as the BBC Micro and Apple II series) they were used for external connections as well. Unfortunately the ribbon-like shape interferes with computer cooling by disrupting airflow within the case and also makes the cables awkward to handle, especially when there are a lot of them; round cables have almost entirely replaced ribbon cables for external connections and are increasingly being used internally as well.

Receptacle Connector

The receptacle connector is a flat, rectangular interface with 34 pin connectors. It is a cost-effective solution to mass data transmission. The connector has become a de facto standard for a serial interface in the 48 to 64 Kbps range and is capable of operating as high as 2 Mbps fairly easily. It is typically used between a modem and a multiplexor. All the items of V.35 series have required UL approval to ensure the product safety and quality.

V.35 receptacle connectors is the interface generally used by most routers and DSUs that connect to T-1 carriers used for synchronous communication interfaces. In general, V.35 is a high-speed serial interface designed to support both higher data rates and connectivity between data-terminal equipment or data-communication equipment over digital lines. The type of connector has been used in many industrial and commercial telecommunication applications including private lines, frame relay, ATM, and Internet access etc.

How Captive Stylus Functions

There are several different kinds of capacitive stylus. But in general, they all work by using an array of sensors to monitor the electrostatic field around the screen. When your finger touches the screen, it changes the electrical capacitance of that portion of the screen. This is detected as a change in voltage at various locations. The microprocessor captures, filters, and analyzes the data. Then it calculates the coordinates of where the touch occurred. When a capacitive stylus is used, the same principles apply. The only difference is that the stylus is acting as a conductor to transmit electrical charge between your hand and the phone. In order to function properly, a capacitive stylus must meet several criteria.

1. A conductive surface: It must be able conduct an electrical charge between your hand and the screen. If the material is too resistive or if the distance between your hand and the screen is too great, the signal reaching the screen may be too weak to be detected.

2. At least 1/4 inch wide: When filtering data, the processor ignores areas that are significantly smaller than a human finger tip. This helps avoid unintentional activation. Having a stylus that is about 1/4 inch wide will ensure that there is enough surface area to be detected.

3. A relatively flat end: Having a flat tip ensures that the whole face can get close enough to the screen to be detected.

4. A smooth surface: This will ensure that you don't scratch up your screen.
