Look around every corner of your home, you will find at least one
electronic product that is powered by a battery. Now the big question is how do
you deal with your dead batteries, rechargeable or otherwise? Should you
recycle the Li-Ion battery pack? If your answer is you throw them into the trash can, then you
must stop doing this because you are destroying the environment. In fact, there
is nothing wrong in using these batteries as long as we properly dispose of
them.
The main objective for recycling batteries is to prevent hazardous materials from entering landfills. Toxic batteries will continue to be with us for a while longer because we have no practical alternatives. And while most battery manufacturers are taking great steps in producing new types of eco-friendly batteries, it’s important to remember that laptop batteries and computer batteries should never, ever be thrown in the trash.
These batteries are usually nickel-cadmium (nicad), lithium ion, or nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH). Nicads are good batteries, but the cadmium in them is toxic. Cadmium in the environment is already a big problem, so it's clear that we want to recycle all nicad batteries.
Do not throw used batteries with solid waste. You can find a local recycling center or contact your city municipal department to know where you can recycle your Li-Ion battery and NiMH battery. So think carefully before you throw your batteries or dump them in an open environment.
